Primary Markets for medicinal plants

Who are the buyers of medicinal plants as a raw material?

- Pharmaceutical companies
- Food supplement industry
- Wholesale distributors for both of the above industries

The primary market for medicinal plants in the world are as follows:

- Europe (5 billion USD in 2004 – food supplements sector)
- USA (5 billion USD in 2009 – food supplements sector)
- China (14 billion USD in 2005 – all sectors)
- Global (between 20 to 60 billion USD in 2004 – all sectors)

In fact, it is difficult to put an exact monetary amount on the medicinal plant industry as a whole. There are three main reasons for this:

1) poor or nonexistent regulations and / or regulating bodies
2) fractured production, purchasing and distribution networks
3) radically different economics between pharmaceutical vs food supplement industries

These figures are based on 2004 to 2009. The reflex the lasted figures available in the public domain as of 2012.

Note the above figures do not include cottage industry sale of medicinal plants world wide which could account for an estimated 10% to 20% of the gross market (6 to 12 billion USD).
